Author : Shafaat Ahmed

Description

Bangladesh and Myanmar, being members of SAARC and ASEAN respectively, can connect South Asia with Southeast Asia. Both countries are least developed and face similar problems. Myanmar occupies a significant position in the geo-strategic interest of Bangladesh since she is the gateway for Bangladesh to Southeast Asia and China. In the recent past, Myanmar was slow and reluctant to accord the desired impetus to its relations with Bangladesh. The number of irritants with Myanmar is relatively few. Nevertheless, even with the relatively small number of outstanding issues, the relationship has not developed to the desired level. Both countries are yet to explore the potentials, especially in the field of trade and commerce for their mutual benefits. Due to their geographical location, both Bangladesh and Myanmar can bridge the economic link between South Asia and Southeast Asia.
