Description

Populism is considered a global phenomenon in 21st century world politics. It is evident in numerous news headlines and political discussions to highlight the emerging political climate around the world. It infects liberal democratic states to dismantle their norms and values, which enables anarchy and chaos within the state. In today’s world, populism spreads like a disease, attacking democratic states with strong and stable institutions. This paper analyzes the reasons behind the rise of populism, focusing on right-wing populism, by evaluating the case studies of the United States of America, Great Britain, and India. The paper aims to identify the elements that contribute to the rise of populist behavior in states along with a comparative analysis of the case studies. Two themes- domestic politics and globalization helped to identify the similarities and odds of populist elements in the country case studies mentioned above. The paper concludes that each case has different populist characteristics but focuses on particular causes. Great Britain exhibited economic populism, as economic factors contributed to the populist surge. Populism dominates India on religious grounds. The political aspect manifests the populist situation in the United States of America under the Trump administration. The paper concludes that, although the case studies have similarities, each country specializes in specific criteria of populism.
